Course Information
Description Study of the research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition and motivation; factors that impact learning; and application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition, and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g. learning inventories) to identify their strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become more effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to continually draw from the theoretical models they have learned. (Cross-listed as PSYC 1300).

Course Policies
Instructor Policies Late work is accepted at the instructor's discretion. However, late work is not acceptable. Therefore, any excuse, short of an emergency, will not be considered. If there are extenuating circumstances, please stay after class or come by early to discuss. Otherwise, there will no late work accepted.

Use correct grammar and spelling in your work, whether handwritten or typed.

Plagiarism is not tolerated. First offense would be a minimum of failure of the assignment. Future offenses result in a grade of F for the course. 

Clear directions will be given in class for every assignment. You will be expected to follow directions as described in class and in the syllabus. 

Students are expected to display mature behavior in the classroom. Be responsible for your actions. You are expected to treat your classmates and your instructor with respect at all times. Failure to do so may result in your removal from the classroom. 

I will not discuss grades over the phone or by personal email. Plan to meet with me in person on campus within a week of the grade or grades you are concerned about at the time. 

All assignments are expected to be completed by YOU and ON TIME. You are responsible for reading as assigned and for being prepared when you come to class. You will need the book for reading and class assignments. 

This is an hour and fifteen minute class. Use of electronics during class will not be tolerated, except as requested by your instructor for class purposes. Once class begins, if you are texting, using a phone, a smart watch, or any other electronic device while we are in class, you may asked to leave the classroom. Your focus should be on the class while you are in the class. You are expected to participate and to be actively engaged in the course activities. You will not be allowed to sleep and/or to be rude or disruptive. 

I want you to know that I am here to help you. I want to provide assistance to help you be a strong student and to put you on the right track for success in college. If there is anything you need help with, please do not hesitate to ask. I will maintain office hours each week on campus as listed previously. You can set up an appointment if you need assistance with the course or need to talk to me about your class performance. Don't wait until it is too late; you must demonstrate responsible behavior. 


Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. 

Attendance will be monitored for every class meeting. Points will be deducted from your total points for every absence and/or late arrival (5 points). 
Students with more than three absences from the course will receive an academic penalty of 1/2 of your attendance points for the semester. Students with five or more absences will receive a 0 for the attendance points for your final grade.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect As per Texas law and LSCPA policy, all LSCPA employees, including faculty, are required to report allegations or disclosures of child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities, which may include a local or state law enforcement agency or the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.
